![]() Which next brings me to the sheer breadth of its impact over time. For no reason I can easily discern, after just a week after or so of listening to the album on repeat, I find myself in awe of its atmosphere. Its greatest strength in my view, other than other relevant talking points like its excellent craftsmanship and far-reaching legacy, is that it’s quite simply a collection of awesome songs. Though my tastes haven’t been drastically reworked with a newfound enjoyment of thrash metal or James Hetfield’s distinctive vocal intonations, I nevertheless enjoyed the shit out of Master of Puppets. Turns out such an inflexible write-off was my loss. I’d long avoided it, having decided early on that Metallica wasn’t for me. What I can do instead is give my perspective as a long-time fan of heavy music absorbing this masterpiece without the filters of time.įirst and foremost, listening to this record surprised me. ![]() As such, I don’t have any interesting anecdotes or reflections to offer. As it happens, my first time hearing this album in its entirety was in preparation for this piece. ![]() Unlike my colleagues here today, who all have long-standing personal relationships with Metallica’s seminal Master of Puppets, I have no such relationship. ![]()
